THE OTHER DAY I was waiting in the barber-shop. In one of the barber chairs in front of me was a man getting his hair cut, while watching the television on the opposite wall. His barber was a talkative one, and the man was taking part in the conversation and responding to the barber. But I noticed he could not keep his EYES off of the television, but would cut them back to the screen every couple seconds or so. Like most all Hollywood movies, what was on the screen gripped his eyes. You might say “he had eyes only for the screen.”
Now I am not here to condemn or judge. What he was watching may have been something worthwhile, but I doubt it. But it COULD have been. There IS good and there is bad on the screen, or most everywhere you look. My purpose here is not to name what is good and bad.
But it got me to thinking. THOSE EYEBALLS! They were taken up with something! And is this not true for us all, all through the day? What do we see? What do we feast our eyes upon? What gets our attention and HOLDS it? What we SEE has much to do with what we THINK? What wins not only our attention but our AFFECTION, our valuable TIME? When the Bible says to “redeem the time for the days are evil,” how much TIME do we WASTE?
The world population as of December, 2017 was over 7 1/2 BILLION. Now a million is one thousand thousand, but a billion with a B is—
The old UK meaning of a billion was a million million, or one followed by twelve noughts (1,000,000,000,000).
The USA meaning of a billion is a thousand million, or one followed by nine noughts (1,000,000,000).
1 million seconds is about 11.6 days
1 us billion seconds is about 32 years
1 uk billion seconds is about 32,000 years

With over 7 BILLION sets of pairs of eyes now on earth, THAT IS A LOT OF LOOKING? Can you imagine how huge this number would be increased if you were to add up the many more billions who have lived during a period of 6,000 years, that started with just two, Adam and Eve, and quickly grew into the millions? Look at that chart above again!
What are all those EYEBALLS looking at? And what do those eyes SEE, what are the brains behind them THINKING? What is being recorded?
We don’t want to think how sin and idolatry ranks in the sights and thoughts of the devil’s children, but what about God’s children? For “God is a jealous God” and will not stand for any gods before Him, vying for your affection and worship—idolatry.
So as a child of God, it is of utmost importance what we feast our eyes upon, what we lend our affection to, and what we THINK with our brains and our heart. It is NOT just a private matter! Listen—
“The EYES of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.” (Prov. 15:3)
Are you not amazed at just how practical is the Word of God in its timely instruction for our living each day?
“Thou art of purer EYES than to behold evil, and canst not LOOK on iniquity: wherefore lookest Thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest Thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he?” (Habakkuk 1:13)
“. . . Yea, the heavens are not clean in His sight.” (Job 15:15) This was true in Job’s time and before. Have you ever thought how DIRTY and FILTHY the very heavens are NOW in this time with all the abominable IMAGES that travel through space to get to YOUR TV screen and to your computer and iphone??????
Do you ever think even a tiny bit like GOD thinks? These very scriptures will help you.
And LOOK at this one with your EYES and your heart: “Turn away mine EYES from beholding vanity; and quicken Thou me in Thy way.” (Psalm 119:37)
“SEEING there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better? For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?” (Ecc. 6:12)
Yet it is GOOD for man to LOOK at himself, even to behold himself in the mirror and THINK and examine himself. Listen to this one:
“. . . Every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
“. . . Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding [looking with his eyes] his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goes his way, and straightway FORGETTETH what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.” (James 1)
Hey, when I say the Bible is so very practical and needful for every-day living, think about what your eyes must face even when you go to town and think about THIS instruction—
“Let thine EYES look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee. Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.” (Prov. 4:25-27)
Now if you are still patiently with me, let me conclude with these 6 verses of divine wisdom from the Psalms:
“Mine EYES are ever toward the Lord; for He shall pluck my feet out of the net.” (25:15)
“The EYES of the Lord are upon the righteous, and His ears are open unto their cry.” (34:15)
“The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his EYES.” (36:1)
“I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.” (101:3)
“OPEN THOU MY EYES, that I may behold wondrous things out of Thy law.” (119:18)
“Behold, as the EYES of servants LOOK unto the hand [for instruction] of their masters, and as the EYES of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so OUR EYES wait upon the Lord . . .” (123:2)
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, THINK on these things.” (Philippians 4:8)
“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)
